Abaqus user element for an accurate modeling of adhesive joints on coarse meshes

چکیده
This work is concerned with the Abaqus implementation of a suitable CAE methodology to get the most benefits of structural adhesive bonding. In this study, we are interested in cohesive debonding where the adhesive thickness and its non-linear behavior are of major importance. When subjected to loading, significant stress field gradients may develop around outer edges of the joint. Because such regions are sites for failure initiation, a specific mesh refinement is needed. Using SIMULIA solutions, an efficient discretization strategy, inspired by the p-FEM, is suggested and is implemented as an Abaqus user element. Balancing the accuracy and the calculation time, in full-scale simulations, it is then possible to capture edge effects and damage initiation. As the approach is suggested to be used in real applications, a validation example has been chosen to show the suitability of the methodology on coarse meshes.

Cohesive Zone Modeling of Mode I Fracture in Adhesive Bonded Joints
This paper deals with the application of Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) concepts to study mode I fracture in adhesive bonded joints. In particular, an intrinsic piece-wise linear cohesive surface relation is used in order to model fracture in a pre-cracked bonded Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimen. Finite element implementation of the CZM is accomplished by means of the user element (UEL) feature...
متن کاملElasto-Plastic Constitutive Model for Finite Element Simulation of structural Adhesives
Considered by the automotive industry as a good solution to bond car body parts together, structural adhesives must be integrated in the early design process of vehicles, hence in the finite element analysis. A first difficulty when modeling structural adhesives comes from their complex mechanical pressure-dependent behaviour as well as their load-dependent strength. These aspects make them imp...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling for Thermal Stresses Developed in Riveted and Rivet - Bonded Joints
A three-dimensional finite element modeling is developed using ABAQUS software. This includes riveted and rivet-bonded joints models. Both models undergo thermal heat caused by hot-driven rivet process and then are subjected to a constant velocity at one of its strip edges to simulate the shear tensile test up to the failure point. The developed FE models were based on elastic-plastic propertie...
